How Asian Noodles Became a Perth Staple

Walk into any supermarket, Asian grocery store, or suburban restaurant across Perth today and you'll find fresh noodles without a second thought. They're as familiar to most Perth households as pasta or rice. But it wasn't always that way. The story of how Asian noodles went from a niche specialty ingredient to a genuine Perth kitchen staple is a story about migration, community, and the quiet but powerful way that food shapes the cities we live in.

A City Built on Migration

Perth has always been a city shaped by waves of migration, and food has followed every single one of them. From the early Chinese gold rush communities of the 1800s to the postwar influx of European migrants, and the more recent waves of Southeast Asian, South Asian, and East Asian communities that have made Perth one of the most culturally diverse cities in Australia — each group brought their culinary traditions with them and gradually wove them into the fabric of the city's food culture.

Chinese and Southeast Asian communities in particular have had a profound and lasting influence on the way Perth eats. Cantonese, Hokkien, Malaysian, Singaporean, Vietnamese, and Thai food traditions all found their footing in Perth over the course of the 20th century, and with them came the noodles, sauces, and techniques that are now completely second nature to Perth home cooks.

From Chinatown to the Suburban Kitchen

In the early days, authentic Asian ingredients were largely confined to specialty stores in and around Perth's Chinatown precinct in Northbridge. For most Perth families outside those communities, Asian noodles were an exotic novelty rather than a weekly staple. Dining out at a Chinese restaurant was a special occasion, and the idea of recreating those dishes at home felt out of reach for most people.

That began to change steadily from the 1970s and 1980s onwards, as Asian grocery stores started appearing in suburban shopping strips and the children of migrant communities began introducing their friends and neighbours to the food they'd grown up eating. School lunches, neighbourhood barbecues, and shared meals became quiet cultural exchanges that slowly but surely expanded the Perth palate.

The Role of Local Producers Like Yunion

One of the most important factors in making Asian noodles genuinely accessible to everyday Perth households was the emergence of local producers who could supply fresh, authentic noodles directly to supermarkets and grocery stores across the city.

When Yunion was founded in 1989, fresh Asian noodles were still largely unavailable outside of specialty stores. Our four founders saw that gap and set about filling it — making fresh Hokkien, wonton, egg, Shanghai, and Japanese-style noodles right here in Osborne Park and getting them onto shelves where everyday Perth families could find them easily. Having a local supplier meant fresher noodles, shorter supply chains, and a product that was genuinely made for the Perth market.

Over the following decades, as Yunion's range grew and distribution expanded, fresh noodles became increasingly easy to find across Perth. And as they became easier to find, more people started cooking with them, creating a virtuous cycle that helped normalise Asian noodles as an everyday ingredient rather than a specialty one.

Perth's Food Culture Today

Today Perth's food scene is one of the most vibrant and diverse in the country. Hokkien noodle stir-fry is as likely to appear on a Perth family's weekly dinner rotation as spaghetti bolognese. Laksa is practically the city's unofficial dish. Yum cha on a Sunday morning is a beloved ritual for families of every background. And fresh noodles bought from a local producer, cooked in a home kitchen, shared around a family table.. are as Perth as anything can be!!

That shift didn't happen overnight, and it didn't happen by accident. It happened because communities shared their food, because local businesses made authentic ingredients accessible, and because Perth turned out to be exactly the kind of open, curious, and hungry city that embraces new flavours and makes them its own.

We're proud to have played a small part in that story and we're looking forward to the next chapter.
