Cream Cheese and Crab Rangoons (The Ultimate Fusion Trend)

If you've spent any time scrolling through food content on social media lately, you've almost certainly encountered Crab Rangoons having a serious moment in the spotlight. And honestly, it's completely deserved. Crispy, golden wonton parcels filled with a decadent mixture of cream cheese, crab, spring onion, and a hint of garlic — these are the kind of appetizers that create genuine excitement at a table. They're indulgent, they're fun, and they're surprisingly simple to make at home with a packet of Yunion standard wonton skins. This is fusion food at its most joyful, and here at Yunion we think they deserve a permanent spot on every party menu in Perth.

Serves: 6-8 as an appetizer Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 250g cream cheese, softened to room temperature

  • 150g imitation crab meat (surimi) or real crab meat, finely shredded

  • 3 spring onions, finely sliced

  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp light soy sauce

  • Pinch of white pepper

For wrapping:

  • 1 packet Yunion Standard Wonton Skins

  • Small bowl of water for sealing

For frying:

  • Neutral oil for deep frying, enough to fill a wok or deep pan to at least 5cm depth

For the dipping sauce:

  • Sweet and sour sauce

  • Or a mix of 3 tbsp sweet chilli sauce, 1 tbsp rice vinegar, and 1 tsp soy sauce

Method

  • Make the filling. Combine softened cream cheese, shredded crab meat, spring onions, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and white pepper in a bowl. Mix thoroughly until completely smooth and well combined. The cream cheese needs to be genuinely soft at room temperature before mixing — cold cream cheese creates a lumpy filling that's difficult to fold evenly into the wrapper.

  • Place a Yunion standard wonton skin flat on a clean surface in a square orientation with a flat edge facing you rather than a corner. Add a small teaspoon of filling directly to the centre. As with all fried wontons, less filling is more — overfilling causes the cream cheese to burst through the seams in the hot oil.

  • This recipe uses a specific star or four-corner envelope fold that completely cages the cream cheese filling. Moisten all four edges with water. Bring the bottom edge up to meet the top edge, pressing firmly along the seam to seal into a rectangle. Then bring the two short ends of the rectangle together, overlapping them slightly, and press firmly to seal. Run your fingers carefully along every single seam to make sure there are no gaps whatsoever. Cream cheese melts aggressively in hot oil and will find any weak point in the seal.

  • Heat neutral oil in a wok or deep pan over medium heat until it reaches approximately 165°C. A slightly lower temperature than standard fried wontons gives the cream cheese filling time to warm through gently without the wrapper over-browning.

  • Fry Rangoons in small batches of 6, turning occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes until deeply golden and crispy all over.

  • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a wire rack.

  • Allow to cool for 2 minutes before serving. The cream cheese filling retains heat intensely and will be extremely hot straight from the oil.

  • Serve with dipping sauce alongside.

Tips

  • Room temperature cream cheese is not just a preference — it's a requirement. Cold cream cheese doesn't mix smoothly with the other filling ingredients and creates an uneven texture that makes folding and sealing much harder. Take the cream cheese out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before you start.

  • The four-corner envelope fold is specifically designed to completely encase the cream cheese and prevent it from leaking into the frying oil. Take extra time and care with the sealing step, pressing firmly along every seam. A small dab of extra water on any edge that feels uncertain will help secure the seal.

  • Real crab meat produces a noticeably more delicate, sweet flavour than imitation crab. If you want to elevate these for a special occasion, fresh or canned crab meat is absolutely worth the upgrade. For everyday entertaining though, good quality imitation crab works beautifully and keeps the recipe very affordable.
