How to Fold Wontons: 3 Easy Methods for Beginners

If you've ever sat down to a bowl of wonton soup at your favourite restaurant and thought "I wish I could make these at home" — good news. You absolutely can. And it's a lot easier than it looks.
Here at Yunion, we make our wonton skins fresh every day, and we genuinely believe that homemade wontons are one of the most satisfying things you can make in the kitchen. Once you've got the folding technique down, the rest is simple. Here are three beginner-friendly methods to get you started.
Before You Begin: A Few Quick Tips
Keep a small bowl of water nearby. Dipping your finger in water and running it along the edges of the wonton skin is what seals everything together.
Don't overfill. A teaspoon of filling is plenty. Overstuffed wontons tend to burst during cooking.
Keep your wonton skins covered with a damp cloth while you work so they don't dry out.
Our Yunion wonton skins are thin, fresh, and pliable — which makes folding much easier than working with dry or brittle skins.
Method 1: The Simple Triangle (Best for Beginners)
This is the easiest fold and a great place to start if you've never made wontons before.
Place a wonton skin flat on a clean surface in a diamond shape, with one corner pointing towards you.
Add a teaspoon of filling to the centre.
Dip your finger in water and run it along all four edges of the skin.
Fold the bottom corner up to meet the top corner, forming a triangle. Press firmly along the edges to seal.
That's it. Simple, clean, and effective.
This shape works beautifully in soups and broth-based dishes where the wonton sits in liquid and absorbs all those gorgeous flavours.
Method 2: The Nurse's Cap (The Classic Wonton Shape)
This is the fold you'll recognise from restaurant wonton soup — slightly more involved than the triangle, but still very manageable for beginners.
Place the wonton skin flat in a diamond shape with one corner pointing towards you.
Add a teaspoon of filling just below the centre.
Fold the bottom corner up to just past the halfway point of the skin, creating a rectangle with a flap at the top.
Moisten the two side corners with water.
Bring the two side corners together, overlapping them slightly, and press firmly to seal.
The result is a little parcel that looks just like the wontons you'd order at a yum cha restaurant. It holds its shape beautifully in soup and has a lovely thick, chewy edge where the layers overlap.
Method 3: The Tortellini Fold (Great for Pan-Frying)
This fold creates a neat, rounded shape that sits flat on the bottom — making it ideal for pan-fried or potsticker-style wontons.
Place the wonton skin flat on your surface.
Add a teaspoon of filling to the centre.
Moisten all four edges with water.
Fold the skin in half to form a rectangle, pressing firmly to seal.
Moisten one of the two short ends.
Bring both short ends together, overlapping slightly, and press to seal.
You'll end up with a neat little ring shape that sits upright in the pan. Fry the flat bottom in a little oil until golden and crispy, then add a splash of water and cover to steam the top through. The result is that perfect combination of crispy base and tender top that makes pan-fried wontons so irresistible.

Choosing Your Filling
The beauty of homemade wontons is that you can fill them with whatever you love. A classic combination is pork mince with ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and a little sesame oil. Prawns with spring onion and white pepper is another favourite. For a vegetarian option, try shiitake mushrooms, tofu, and water chestnuts seasoned with soy and sesame.
Whatever filling you choose, make sure it's well seasoned before you start folding. A little pinch of filling cooked in a pan is the best way to taste-test before you commit to a whole batch.
